First thing's first - when should you travel? The first rule for me of cheap travel is being as open as possible. Traveling in off-seasons is a plus as well. Off seasons are the times of the year when that particular destination is not at its height of tourism. All countries and cities differ, so be sure to do your research.
Flight - $424
Personally, when traveling I wait until Scott's Cheap Flights posts deals and I go off those dates. For Thailand, I booked my flight to Bangkok (BKK) from Washington, DC Dulles (IAD) for $424 roundtrip, because of a deal I received from Scott's Cheap Flights. Scott's is amazing at sending deals out almost daily from airports across the world and sometimes savings are up to 90%. Use my referral link and sign up here. The deals aren't on cheap low budget airlines either. I flew on the 5 Star airline ANA which is a Star Alliance partner with United Airlines.
Hotel - FREE (Paid with points)
Next was the hotel. This is where brand loyalty comes into play and is important. For years, I've been a Marriott Rewards member and just recently they transitioned into the Marriott Bonvoy program. I only stayed at Marriott owned properties and last year I decided to status match with Hilton Hotels. I am now GOLD in both programs and that comes in handy for a lot of reasons.
The room was 100,000 points and I got my fifth night free because of Hilton’s 4 nights Stay 5th Night free deal. After arriving to the hotel because I’m a Gold member, I was automatically upgraded to a deluxe room even after paying by points, was offered upgraded WiFi, free water and we got free breakfast every morning. And their breakfast is so much better the breakfast back home.
Travel - $0.50 - $2.00 per trip
The hotel is next to their sky train system and the train ranges from 16 THB - 70 THB depending on your distance which is only 50 cents - $2.00. Almost everything is also in English so getting around is very easy. They have their version of Uber which is called “GRAB”, also cheap.
Things to do
Things to do that are free or cheap: Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre (FREE) | Visit Grand Palace & Emerald Buddha ($3) | Siam Park City ( $22 ) | Night Market / SILOM Bars (No Cover, Drinks Range from $4 - $8) Download Klook App for a bunch of deals on activities that may cost
Because everything in Thailand is inexpensive it’s all about portion control. Mainly with shopping. You can buy a bunch of stuff for cheap but end up spending so much because you went over board. Knowing your limit and sticking to it is important - also have someone who is good at haggling with u to negotiate. A lot of sightseeing is free so we did that. We saw temples, museums and more. All in all, I spent about $550 on my trip. From start to finish.
